2025 was officially declared the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation (IYGP) by the United Nations at a crucial time when we see this vital resource rapidly impacted. In this talk, I look forward to exploring the significance of the year, discussing the importance of glaciers and why they matter from different lenses, some of the key players working with glaciers and the global action that is being mobilized to protect them – from water security and agriculture, to tourism and energy.
About Sarah Karasiuk:
Sarah Karasiuk is a Commerce graduate from Edmonton, Alberta. Her studies in International Business focused on the communications and storytelling of an array of initiatives in developing countries to ultimately foster awareness. After graduation she found herself working at the Alpine Club of Canada looking after their Access and Environment portfolio and now continues alongside the Club acting as a volunteer with the Environment Committee. She currently acts as the World Tour Manager with the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival where this year she helped to host their first Fire and Ice Symposium, exploring the role of storytelling to create positive impact and action, through the lens of changing ice and wildfire.
